Detroit will try to break world record for ugly sweaters

Video Preview

Even if your first experience with a really ugly sweater was a poorly thought out gift from Grandma who just didn't know better, little did you know that this would become something very fun and enjoyable during the holiday season in the future. The most unlikely of fashion prophets who were ahead of their time! In fact, you're probably regretting happily passing it along as a hand-me down. And someone, somewhere is laughing their way to Christmas 2017! But don't fret! – posted

Remember being a kid and the excitement of waking up on Christmas Day knowing there was a mountain of presents waiting to be opened? Then remember the disappointment you felt when you opened up the gift box from Grandma, only to see an unbelievably garish, ugly Christmas sweater sitting in the box. You questioned the sanity of your grandma at the time because who in their right mind would buy such a deplorable sweater. Little did you know that grandma was a fashionista before her time.

You can get an extra use out of that ugly Christmas sweater this year by taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt, reported Detroit Free Press (US). is hosting an event in Detroit where attendees will try to break the record for the largest gathering of people wearing ugly holiday sweaters. It starts at 6:30 p.m. sharp, Saturday at Beacon Park.

The current ugly sweater record stands at 3,473 and was set at the Kansas Athletics-Montana men's basketball game on Dec. 19, 2015, in Lawrence, Kansas.

After the record attempt, there will be a silent disco in Beacon Park's Winter Lodge tent where sweater lovers can don headphones and silently sway to three channels of music broadcast by Detroit radio stations.
