Drowning kangaroo saved from swimming pool

A kangaroo was saved from drowning in a backyard suburban swimming pool in Australia's Victoria state on Thursday (April 24). Australian broadcaster Channel 7 showed footage of the kangaroo struggling to get out of the pool.

A wayward kangaroo found itself in deep trouble today when it jumped over a fence and into the backyard pool of a property in Victoria's northeast.

The Eastern Grey kangaroo was found just in time.

The large male had been fighting for his life for around four hours after jumping a fence and into the deep end of the swimming pool at the Healesville property.

Wildlife Victoria's Manfred Zabinskas said: "The main concern when a kangaroo has been in the water for so long is they will obviously struggle with energy.

"Eventually, they will get tired and the risk was he was going to drown."

The big buck was taken to the Healesville Sanctuary suffering from hypothermia, and with his nails worn down by the struggle to swim.

A major concern for rescuers was that he could develop pneumonia.

"He was very cold by the time I pulled him out," Mr Zabinskas said. "He's actually suffering from hypothermia and the vets are working really hard to get his body temperature back up."

As the animal regains his strength, it is hoped that he will be released back into the bush in the following days.

Kangaroos actually are adept swimmers, and often sneak into backyard pools, or dip into the Ocean if they like.

Australians frequently get uninvited visitor in their garden, for a little pool party. But it is advised not to bother him or her on their swimming routine, since they are not as nice as you think, and can kick like hell....

As Kangaroos are excellent swimmers they have even been seen swimming in oceans. It is believed that many kangaroos will swim in salt water to help heal a wound it may have.

or they flee into waterways if threatened by a predator. If pursued into the water, a kangaroo may use its forepaws to hold the predator underwater so as to drown it.
