Irma's center was about 650 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa Thursday morning.
Maximum sustained winds were near 100 mph. It was heading west-northwest at 10 mph, and no coastal watches or warnings were in effect.
Irma is forecast to become a major hurricane by Thursday night and is expected to be an extremely dangerous hurricane for the next several days.
