Russia claims it can wipe out US Navy

Russia has claimed it can disable the entire US Navy in one fell swoop using powerful electronic signal jamming, reported Fox News (US).

A news report from the country – where the media is essentially controlled by the state – said the technology could render planes, ships and missiles useless.
The newsreader says: “Today, our Russian Electronic Warfare (REW) troops can detect and neutralise any target from a ship’s system and radar, to a satellite.”

The news report claims a single Russian war plane flew several times around American destroyer the USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea several years ago, disabling its systems and leaving it helpless.
The report also claims they are capable to creating electronic jamming domes over their bases that make them invisible on radar screens.

The propaganda piece even quotes top US General Frank Gorenc as saying: “Russian electronic weapons completely paralyse the functioning of American electronic equipment installed on missiles, aircraft and ships.”
The reporter adds: “You don’t need to have expensive weapons to win – powerful radio-electronic jamming is enough.”

The news comes after Donald Trump dispatched the USS Carl Vinson, powered by nuclear reactors, carrying almost 100 aircraft and accompanied by destroyers, a cruiser, and a submarine to the Korean Peninsula.
And the commander-in-chief is said to be bolstering American deployment in the region by sending the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Nimitz to the Sea of Japan next week.

Russia, along with China, is said to have sent a spy ship to the area to ward off the task force amid rising tensions in the region.


April 15 is celebrated as Electronic Warfare (EW) Specialist Day in Russia. Technology is in active development today and new systems are designed for warfare on the ground, in the air and at sea, reported TASS (Russia).

Last year, the Russian Army started testing integral parts of a ground-based electronic warfare system capable of defending troops and civil facilities against aerospace attacks.
An electronic warfare system is a major element of the military organization of a state and an integral part of all armed conflicts of the past few years and has proven its efficiency in the Russian air task force’s operation in Syria.

Russia’s electronic warfare history dates back to the Russo-Japanese War. Specifically, on April 15, 1904, when a squadron of Japanese warships was shelling the inner harbor of Port Arthur, radio stations of the Russian battleship Pobeda and the coastal post Zolotaya Gora caused interference to the enemy’s radio communications to seriously impair the transmission of telegrams by hostile fire-control vessels.

As Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said, all military conflicts show that electronic warfare means are most of all effective and in great demand in troops in all areas.
All the technologies being developed by institutes of Radio-Electronic Technologies Group (KRET) are needed by the Defense Ministry and enjoy high demand on the external market. I know that the export volume of KRET’s products grows annually.”

According to Russia’s Electronic Warfare Force Commander Major-General Yuri Lastochkin, modern Russian military technology surpasses Western rivals by a number of characteristics, including the range of its operation. This is achieved through the use of more powerful transmitters and more effective antenna systems.

“The technology also offers advantages in terms of the number of objectives that are impaired and the possibility of its more effective combat use through a flexible structure of commanding both EW systems and individual military hardware items functioning autonomously and as part of contiguous pairs.”

Considerable attention is also paid to developing platforms with unmanned aerial vehicles. A specialized Electronic Warfare practice range is planned to be created by 2018.

Airborne EW systems
As former Electronic Warfare Chief of the Russian Air Force and currently adviser to the First Deputy CEO of Radio-Electronic Technologies Group (KRET, part of state hi-tech corporation Rostec) Vladimir Mikheyev told TASS, the aircraft’s survivability increases by 20-25 times with modern EW platforms.

“Active jamming stations were previously installed on aircraft, whereas today all combat planes are equipped with defensive aids systems. Their main distinction from active jamming stations is that they are fully integrated and contiguous with the entire avionics of an aircraft, a helicopter or a drone.”

Defensive aids systems exchange all necessary information with onboard computers on:
- the aircraft’s flight and combat missions;
- the goals and the routes of the defended aircraft’s flight;
- the capabilities of the aircraft’s weapons;
- the real electronic environment in the air;
- potential threats.
In case of any danger, the route can be corrected to prevent the defended plane from entering the zone of fire engagement and ensure electromagnetic impairment (suppression) of an enemy’s most dangerous air defense weapons and aircraft while increasing the combat effectiveness of its own means of destruction.
