A man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman at Essex's V Festival, one of 41 arrests made at the event.

The 21-year-old is suspected of raping the woman, in her 40s, after the end of Friday's music session at Chelmsford's Hylands Park.

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed the arrest of the man, adding the force had been contacted about the alleged incident at 1.30am on Sunday, 23 August.

The man is being questioned by detectives and is being held in custody.

Among the other arrests were one for sexual assault and a number of others for ticket touting, theft, possession of drugs with intent to supply and breach of the peace.

The event was expected to attract around 50,000 fans, flocking to see acts including Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding and Scouting For Girls.

Officers at the event also enforced a council ban on the recreational use of laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide.
