A digger was left embedded in a bank branch after thieves apparently attempted to steal a cash machine.
Raiders used the vehicle to smash into the front of the Santander branch in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.
The building was badly damaged, but the ATM was left lying among the debris.
A restaurant on the other side of the street was also damaged, thought to have been caused by the digger driving backwards and forwards.
The attempted raid happened at around 3am on Monday, and police say it is not clear whether anything was stolen.
The road was due to be closed for most of the day while investigations and repairs were carried out.
