As a 1799 law said, a women who wished to wear men’s clothes seek and receive permission from Paris authorities.
The law was amended around 1900.
Women were allowed to wear trouser-like “pantaloons,” if they were “holding the handlebars of a bicycle or the reins of a horse,”
Though it has been ignored for decades, formally it remained on the statute books.
The Minister of Women's Rights, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, said that the ban was incompatible with modern French values and laws.
Green Party lawmakers pushing in 2010 for an overturn of the law.
The request was taken seriously, and the 1799 law was last week officially confirmed null and void.
