If you ever watched 'The Shining' and wished you had the mind-reading powers of Hallorann, then you may be in luck, reported LADBible (US).
According to a top surgeon, it's only a matter of time until our brains are connected to the internet, thus giving humans telepathic powers.
Dr. Eric Leuthardt of Washington University is confident that in around 20 years, humans will be able to get brain transplants that allow them to share information with others.
In an interview with MIT Technology Review, Leuthardt explained how it would work by people getting chips implanted in their brain (a la Black Mirror) which would give humans computer-like interface. It's not unlikely considering how much technology has advanced, even in the last ten years.
He said: "A true fluid neural integration is going to happen. It's just a matter of when. If it's 10 or 100 years in the grand scheme of things, it's a material development in the course of human history."
In addition to being able to chat with ourselves, the technology would also mean reading other people's minds too.
Leuthardt reckons the likeliest way this is going to happen is by shrinking computers until they fit in our brains. He added: "At the pace at which technology changes, it's not inconceivable to think that in a 20-year time frame, everything in a cell phone could be put into a grain of rice.
"That could be put into your head in a minimally invasive way, and would be able to perform the computations necessary to be a really effective brain-computer interface."
While Leuthardt is currently on the case, trying to create this technology, one of his research partners - Gerwin Schalk - said there's still some way to go before true telepathy can be developed.
"What you really want is to be able to listen to the brain and talk to the brain in a way that the brain cannot distinguish from the way it communicates internally, and we can't do that right now.
"We really don't know how to do it at this point. But it's also obvious to me that it is going to happen.
"And if and when that happens, our lives are going to change, and our lives are going to change in a way that is completely unprecedented."
Damn straight - this could open up a whole can of worms for some people (and could most definitely ruin a few relationships).
